Monte Vista Organic Farm officially began in 1993. We started farming at home in La Mesilla, just south of Española, on a mere two acres. Farmer Dave, who is obsessive about tomatoes, was planning to grow tomatoes for drying, but Loretta saw the beautiful, fresh produce and insisted on trying the Santa Fe Farmers’ Market. The experiment was successful and now the farm has spread to an additional three acres in Rio Lucio near Taos.
David and Loretta both grew up in the beautiful Española valley, an agrarian community known for its agricultural traditions. Farming, and supporting and feeding a family from the land, is in their blood. After they retired from the nearby government facility they put all their energy into creating the special place that is Monte Vista Organic Farm.
Where We Are Now
Today, Monte Vista Organic Farm is multi-generational. David and Loretta's children are both part of the farm business and continue to work toward the farm's continued existence. We acquired a solar array in 2015 that offsets most of the farm's carbon footprint and we now offer a CSA subscription. We've hosted many farm interns, classes and celebrations at the farm over the years and we feel like we are an integral part of the food community in northern New Mexico. We welcome visitors and inquiries throughout the year and plan to keep growing and learning for generations to come.
